Początek lat 60-tych XX wieku, małe prowincjonalne miasteczku na południu Stanów Zjednoczonych. Po śmierci matki czternastoletnia Lily Owens mieszka na farmie z ojcem, który nie potrafi zapewnić jej należytej opieki.
